What is neurologist, cerebral palsy neurological, neurology nervous system

A neurologist is a doctor who specializes and treats patients who suffer from diseases of the nervous system such as the spinal cord injury, muscles and nerves problems. Neurology is a vast subject and very few opt to take up that specialty. So very few neurologists are available and among them very few are well experienced and good in their treatment.

A patient with neurological problem will have loss of sight, hearing, smell, taste and the sensation go test. The inability to perform normal motor functions is also a symptom of nervous problem. The clinical examination consists of seeing the balance, reflex and the muscle strength. They also examine the cause of loss of memory, speech and abstract thought.

Neurologists take a series of tests before coming to a conclusion about the diagnosis. The tests include MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CA scan (Computed Axial Tomography), EEG (Electroencephalography), EMG (Electromyography). The tests that are needed after consulting with the patients symptoms are taken and the conclusion is made with the result and patients complaints. Then the treatment is started.

Some times the neurologists get advice from the psychiatrist to treat the patients. Neurology examines the physical functioning f the nervous system while psychiatry focuses on its behavior. In US they have an American Board of psychiatry and Neurology. This organization helps the two fields to study work together. The ANPN gives additional certification to the specialists in child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.

To become a full fledged neurologists one has to work hard for 12 years minimum. They must finish four years of undergraduate college education, four years in medical school, a single year internship and three complete years of Neurology resident, to get qualified. Only after finishing this12 years they can start practicing as a neurologist.

They specialize in some fields of neurology by doing some fellowship programs.

The common diseases of the neurology patients are Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. The Neurologists also study about the difficulty in functioning of the nerves following a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, sleep disorders and chronic pain due to conditions like migraine. It is a difficult field in medicine as it deals with the nervous system. It sometimes does not give satisfaction to the doctors as the curing rate of patients is less and they can only get some improvement and should learn to live with it. Hence they refer to a psychiatrist to give them counseling and try to convince them to learn to live with the disease .It is a part of the treatment. All patients with chronic diseases tend to get affected psychologically. Hence they need psychological treatment along with this. Neurologists get along with psychiatrist to cure the patient.
