Get To Know About Neurosurgery

Journal of neurosurgery, neurosurgery video, neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is a part of surgical treatment that deals with the central nervous system and the spine. The surgeon who does surgery on the spine and the nervous system is called a Neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon is specialized in spine, brain and nerve related surgeries. He is well trained in sophisticated surgeries and he has advance knowledge regarding surgical and imaging technology and does research in molecular neurosurgery and gene therapy. The common neurological problems are cerebral hemorrhage and aneurysms, head injury caused by accidents, degenerative diseases of the spine, congenital abnormalities, tumors and neurological management of the CNS.

Degeneration of the spine is a common problem, Most of the people get back ache, which has to treated carefully If it is not treated properly it might lead to degeneration of the discs, which then leads to changes in the bony structure and cause nerve compression. So the patient ends up stiffness in the neck. They may have pain, numbness in the neck. In such cases he is referred to a neurosurgeon.

Congenital abnormalities occur during embryonic development. The Central nervous system is formed in stages with the different type of cells moving together and separating into other structures in a stipulated period. Defects can occur at different stages of development. The defects with which infants can be born are myelomeningocleles, encephaloceles, hydrocephalus, and craniosynostosis.

The Neurosurgeons take care of patients with brain abscesses due to infection in the brain. The patient get altered mental status, and increases intracranial pressure. CT scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are helpful in diagnosis. If antibiotics don’t give any improvement then they go for surgery in the brain.

One type of neurosurgery is functional neurosurgery. It is used to manage movement disorder, epilepsy and pain. Stereotactic neurosurgery, through coordinate system, gives accurate navigation to a specific point or a particular region in the brain. In this surgery four pins are inserted into the outer skull and the scalp. The frame is stabilized and sterotactic arc and a special box are placed to precisely determine X,Y,Z coordinates of nay point within the frame.

Most of population takes antiepileptic medicines for seizure disorders. Many cases are temporal lobe (the brain lobes located on the sides of the head) epilepsy. The drugs given do not control the problem and tend to cause side effects which are more compared to the cure. Surgery will be recommended by the neurosurgeon if continual seizures cause injuries due to repeated falls, driving restrictions, limitation of social interactions, problems related to education and learning and employment limitations.

The neursurgeons have a bright future with the invention of molecular neurosurgery. The field of molecular neurosurgery can take their field to a high level.
